Who is Jesus? That’s a great question.

And all growth begins with a great question. Each weekend at Propel we will dive into a piece of this question, what the bible teaches, and what it all means for your life.

But until the weekend comes, here are some great starting places to find some answers to this all important question. You can click on the links or grab a bible and read them. You can also download the YouVersion Bible App.

Who Is Jesus?

We believe that Jesus is God’s son. Jesus came to Earth to show us the character God. He did this for one reason: to rescue us from the consequences of evil.

He had some special characteristics about him. Jesus is the only person who has ever lived a “sinless life”–or a life that never went against God’s plan. Because he was fully God and fully human, he made every right choice, had every right motivation, and never stumbled in any aspect of life.

He has a pretty cool story too. He was born of a virgin named Mary. She was hand selected by God to carry his son. Remember, he came to rescue us from the consequences of evil? He did this by taking on every consequence that belongs to us for all our mistakes, and he invites us to some pretty amazing things.

When Jesus was nailed to a cross, he paid for every sin and that payment freed us. Now we can be rescued from our consequences, if we choose. When he rose from the dead after being buried in a tomb for 3 days, he ascended (or went up to) Heaven where God placed him at his right hand. That means God put Jesus in a place of authority. Because of this authority given to him, we get to learn more every day about God’s character through Jesus. But the first step is asking him to allow the sacrifice he made to free us.

What Is The Bible?

We believe the entire Bible was inspired by God and that it’s a pretty great book worth taking a look at. And since God inspired all of it, we call it infallible, or completely correct. We don’t think the bible can be added to, subtracted from, or replaced by any other text because then it wouldn’t be God’s word, it would be someone else’s. It is the best place to start in looking for truth in anything and everything we do.

Here are some scriptures that talk more about how important the bible it and they guide our beliefs about it.

Is God a Father?

We believe there is only one God. He has a special characteristic about him. We call it the Trinity which just means 3. It means that God exists in three distinct and equal parts. Like an apple, which has a core, flesh, and skin. We believe God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is the creator of the entire universe. He is never changing and consistent. He is eternal and powerful. We also believe that His love is completely unending, which is pretty good news.

Here are a few scriptures to get you started on learning more about God as a Father. Remember, God is different from your dad. He’s a flawless Father. Get to know him more through these verses:

Who Is The Holy Spirit?

We believe that one part of God is the Holy Spirit. That Spirit was in Jesus and was given after Jesus went to heaven to believers here on Earth. The Holy Spirit was giving to instruct and improve people who follow God and He is part of every decision we make. He was also given to empower Christians and the Church to accomplish great things as we show the nature of God to the world.

We believe Holy Spirit is alive and active today and as believers, our goal is to live Spirit-led, Spirit-empowered life so our actions, motivations, and choices can reflect the heart of God in every way.

Acts 1:5, 8

Ephesians 3:16

Why Is Life So Hard?

We believe that men and women were created in the image of God. That means we were made to have his traits and to have fellowship with Him. But something went drastically wrong and we became alienated from that relationship with God. This happens through sin and as a result, mankind is totally incapable of coming back into a right relationship with God by his own effort. That’s the sad news. But there’s Good News too.

Is There Any Good News?

We believe that God required a perfect sacrifice to pay for the consequences of sins. That perfect sacrifice was Jesus, because Jesus was without sin. The blood of Jesus Christ on the cross provides the sole basis for the forgiveness of sins, which means we don’t have to pay for our own consequences because he already paid for them.

Salvation is a free gift and only occurs when a person realizes they need God and asks Jesus for forgiveness. By this, you can place your faith in the death and resurrection of Christ as the ultimate payment for your sins.

How Can I Live For God?

We believe that every Christian gets to live their life for Jesus and not for themselves. It’s a great purpose to have because it gives your life meaning and legacy. By learning to live by the instructions found in the Bible, getting involved in a community of faith like the local church, and listening and following the Holy Spirit, every believer matures. Eventually, we begin to become conformed to the image of Christ, or we start to take on his character in everything we do.

Is Church Important?

We believe that the church is awesome. It’s like the family of God here on the earth and we think that’s kind of a big deal. Everyone that trusts in Jesus gets adopted into that big family. And like every family, we have our issues. We don’t always get it right. But we are all working towards something great where we get to participate with God in bringing about His purposes of hope, redemption and grace in the world. Like we said, it’s kind of a big deal and we are so thankful to get to be a part of it.

Will Jesus Come Back?

We absolutely believe that Jesus will return. We believe in the resurrection of believers, or simply that people who have faith in Jesus, will live in heaven for eternity. We also believe in the final judgment where God will establish consequences for everyone, unless they have asked Jesus for forgiveness and freedom. That is why we are so passionate about reaching people.

Finally, we believe in all things being made right in the new heaven and the new earth and that only the Father knows the time of Jesus’ return so we will live lives that are always seeking to be ready for something great.
